He’s also been gaining attention by enticing crowds with his songs filled with stories of the open road (one of his favorite places to make music) and the people that he has met along the way. Hutchinson’s most recent studio release, Moving Up Living Down, is a delightfully witty album that features more of his catchy guitar pop and R&B-influenced rock and perfectly displays his songwriting skills and swagger. The music is tuneful and rhythmic; the lyrics engaging and reflective. The road remains Hutchinson’s favorite place to make music and will make a stop at the Minnesota Zoo on June 15.

These days there are many ways to pick up organic fruit from your local grocery stores but they are typically 50% more than your non-organic choices.  So what are you going to do if you are on budget and don’t have that extra money to spend every week to go organic.  There are a number of excellent choices out there for “fruit and vegetable washes”.  Here is a link to try one Karmalades but if you do a search on Google you will many excellent choices.   These products can take off the pesticides you don’t want on your food without having to spend all that money every month going organic.

We also wanted to spotlight a cool idea from Norwex that is a simple wash cloth that cleans off your fruit and veggies.  We’ve got a video here for you to check out as well that shows off how cool it is.

Do you want to go green while doing your spring cleaning?

Posted on by thiestalle in apartment living | Leave a comment

We’ve gone out and done a little reading and researching to try to put together a few helpful tips on how you can go green this spring while you are getting your life in order and gettng the clutter you’ve accumulated this winter into the trash!

Here are a few basic “green” cleaning supplies you can use and how to use them:

  • Distilled white vinegar (sold in the cooking section of most supermarkets)
  • Baking soda
  • Olive oil
  • Borax (sold in a box in the laundry aisle)
  • Liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s brand, found in most natural foods stores)
  • Essential oils (super concentrated natural plant oils found in natural foods stores, usually in the cosmetics section)
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths  (check out Norwex for some great products)
  • Newspaper

Here are a few ideas / recipies that you can put together and try out around you place.

  • Glass: Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray on glass and wipe clean with old newspaper or a lint-free cloth.
  • Countertops and bathroom tile: Mix 2 parts vinegar and 1 part baking soda with 4 parts water. Apply with a sponge, scour, and wipe away.
  • Floors: Mix 4 cups of white distilled vinegar with about a gallon of hot water. If desired, add a few drops of pure peppermint or lemon oil for a pleasant scent. After damp mopping the floors, the smell of vinegar will dissipate quickly, leaving behind only the scent of the oil.
  • Wood furniture: Mix equal parts of lemon juice and olive and oil. Apply a small amount to a cloth, and rub onto the furniture in long, even strokes.
  • Toilet bowl cleaner: Sprinkle a toilet brush with baking soda and scrub away! Occasionally disinfect your toilet by scrubbing with borax instead. Wipe the outside of the toilet clean with straight vinegar.
  • Disinfectant: Mix 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons vinegar, 3 cups hot water, and 1/4 teaspoon liquid castile soap. Wipe on with dampened cloth or use a spray bottle. Wipe clean.
  • Mold and mildew: Wipe with straight vinegar.
  • Air freshener: Sprinkle essential oil on a cotton ball, and stash it in a corner of the room. If you have kids, make sure it is out of their reach as essential oils are very strong and could irritate their skin. Lavender is a relaxing scent that is great for bedrooms, and cinnamon, clove, and citrus oils are great for the rest of the house. You can stash a few in the car too—try peppermint, which may help you to stay alert.

And finally if going green just isn’t your game, kick back and enjoy a few ideas from Ellen.

Minnesota and the Civil War

Posted on by thiestalle in things to do | Leave a comment
The Civil War holds a pivotal place in the history of the United States. Citizens of the new state of Minnesota were a major part of the national story, from being the first state to offer troops through their dramatic role at Gettysburg to Appomattox and beyond. To commemorate the sesquicentennial of these events, the Minnesota Historical Society is offering a broad range of programs, publications and online content from now through 2015.
Visit the Minnesota History Museum Website for more information on this exhibit that starts on March 2nd, 2013
