Do you want to go green while doing your spring cleaning?

Posted on by thiestalle in apartment living | Leave a comment

We’ve gone out and done a little reading and researching to try to put together a few helpful tips on how you can go green this spring while you are getting your life in order and gettng the clutter you’ve accumulated this winter into the trash!

Here are a few basic “green” cleaning supplies you can use and how to use them:

  • Distilled white vinegar (sold in the cooking section of most supermarkets)
  • Baking soda
  • Olive oil
  • Borax (sold in a box in the laundry aisle)
  • Liquid castile soap (like Dr. Bronner’s brand, found in most natural foods stores)
  • Essential oils (super concentrated natural plant oils found in natural foods stores, usually in the cosmetics section)
  • Microfiber cleaning cloths  (check out Norwex for some great products)
  • Newspaper

Here are a few ideas / recipies that you can put together and try out around you place.

  • Glass: Mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray on glass and wipe clean with old newspaper or a lint-free cloth.
  • Countertops and bathroom tile: Mix 2 parts vinegar and 1 part baking soda with 4 parts water. Apply with a sponge, scour, and wipe away.
  • Floors: Mix 4 cups of white distilled vinegar with about a gallon of hot water. If desired, add a few drops of pure peppermint or lemon oil for a pleasant scent. After damp mopping the floors, the smell of vinegar will dissipate quickly, leaving behind only the scent of the oil.
  • Wood furniture: Mix equal parts of lemon juice and olive and oil. Apply a small amount to a cloth, and rub onto the furniture in long, even strokes.
  • Toilet bowl cleaner: Sprinkle a toilet brush with baking soda and scrub away! Occasionally disinfect your toilet by scrubbing with borax instead. Wipe the outside of the toilet clean with straight vinegar.
  • Disinfectant: Mix 2 teaspoons borax, 4 tablespoons vinegar, 3 cups hot water, and 1/4 teaspoon liquid castile soap. Wipe on with dampened cloth or use a spray bottle. Wipe clean.
  • Mold and mildew: Wipe with straight vinegar.
  • Air freshener: Sprinkle essential oil on a cotton ball, and stash it in a corner of the room. If you have kids, make sure it is out of their reach as essential oils are very strong and could irritate their skin. Lavender is a relaxing scent that is great for bedrooms, and cinnamon, clove, and citrus oils are great for the rest of the house. You can stash a few in the car too—try peppermint, which may help you to stay alert.

And finally if going green just isn’t your game, kick back and enjoy a few ideas from Ellen.

Valentines day gift for him ideas

Let’s face it.  There are a few things that guys always like and one of them is a new toy to play with.  Here is an idea we came across that you will enjoy.  Tuck the shiny new toy that he’s been eyeing (like an iPod touch, shown) in the front pocket of a white collared shirt. He’ll look smart and polished at the office — and love having apps for just about everything at his fingertips.

Make His Valentine’s Gift Special: Preload the iPod touch with a few apps you know he’ll love, so it will be ready to use right when he opens it.

how to cook the perfect turkey

Is it your first time having the family over for the big holiday dinner?  Are you afraid to put that 20lb monster turkey in the oven for fear that you are going to overcook it and have it come out dry?  We are here to take some of the mystery out of this process and get you to the table with a tasty piece of poultry.  The video below that we found on YouTube goes over some of the basics that you need to know in terms of getting the turkey ready for the oven and how to monitor that it is cook to the perfect point of doneness.

One note is that you do not have to use the stuffing they show you here.  I would recommend that you do not stuff the bird at all.  It will cook faster and more evenly.  You still want to monitor the temperture and pull it our right when it says 165 degrees.  Do not let it stay in longer than that or you will end up with that sad and dry turkey :(

If you do want to have stuff make it in a seperate pan.  One recipe that we highly recommend you try is this cornbread stuff from the Food Network website

I left my wallet and keys in my desk at work—again! It was the second time in two weeks that I’d gotten all the way to the subway station on my evening commute home only to have to turn around and retrieve the important objects I left behind in my rush. Work has been pretty busy and since it feels like there are 1,001 things, both big and little, to get done, I catch myself continually trying to squeeze just one more thing into the already stretched-thin final minutes at work. In my carelessness, the five or so minutes saved by sending that last email turned into twenty minutes wasted. Read more

Invest in your health

Over the last 8 months my lifestyle has changed a bit! A lot more time sitting at my desk in from of the computer! As a personal trainer and yoga instructor, I have worked really hard over the years to keep my clients backs healthy, both from a prevention and rehab standpoint. In turn, I have always had a really healthy back. What I realized in the process of starting Dream Day Essentials and now Society Wellness is that the crummy office chair I had been sitting on was offering NO support during the long hours I am now seated.
